I wonder if she had health care benefits.
A Mennonite hotel maid at the Chautauqua Institute, New York, during a Highlights authors and illustrators conference. I asked the young lady to stand still for a moment so I could draw her. She was one of many Mennonites working for the several hotels at the lakeside resort town. The cultural differences were so stark- the Mennonites covered head to toe in the 90 degree temperature scurrying about, getting their work done, while the rest of us lolled about in shorts and polo shirts, slurping up 3 scoop ice cream cones. I wonder if her job came with health care benefits. Pencil, 2001.
